The original set of Fairy Tails birds consisted of 12 birds with long silky tails and symbols painted on their chests to identify them. Each bird came with a fairy tails bird-shaped comb, perch, a tulle "hair netting" ribbon and a satin ribbon. Some birds packaged on bubble cards in the UK also came with a 3 pack of bow-shaped barrettes as well. Accessory color occasionally varied depending on the country the birds were purchased in.

Fairy Tails bird tails are made of doll hair, and are over 10 inches long. Such long hair easily tangles even with gentle, everyday handing and after years of play, has most often become a snarled, matted mess. Finding second hand birds today with straight, silky tails can be a challenge. The bird's hinged feet can also split at the seam, causing the bird's toes to be loose and wiggle around when not in the closed position.
